Canmore in winter

Between November and April the Bow Valley is a different place — quieter, snowier, and honestly more fun. Here's what to plan around.

Downhill skiing

Nakiska in Kananaskis is your closest hill — about 30 minutes from The Owl's Nest, less crowded than the bigger resorts, and family-friendly. If you want more terrain, Sunshine Village and Lake Louise are 1 hr and 1 hr 15 min away.

Nordic (cross-country) skiing

The Canmore Nordic Centre was built for the 1988 Olympics and still hosts World Cup races. Groomed trails for classic and skate skiing, night skiing on lit loops, and rentals on site. 15 minutes from the condo.

Skating outdoors

The Pond in Canmore is a small outdoor rink downtown, free to use. Bring your own skates. On cold weeks, Lake Minnewanka and Two Jack Lake freeze into some of the most photogenic wild skating in the world.

Snowshoeing

Chester Lake, Troll Falls, and the Peter Lougheed area all have easy, well-marked snowshoe routes. Rent snowshoes in Canmore for around $20/day.

What to pack

  • Layers — highs can swing 20°C in a day with chinook winds.
  • Waterproof boots with real tread; sidewalks get icy.
  • Sunglasses (yes, in January) and lip balm.
  • A swimsuit — the condo's shared hot tub is open all winter.
